2024 Women's Soccer Team: A Look Back
The 2024 season was a milestone year for the Women’s Soccer program, marking the best record in team history and showcasing an impressive mix of individual brilliance and team unity. With a final record of 7-5-3, this season set new standards for excellence, breaking several team and individual records while laying a strong foundation for future success.
The Sound’s 2024 season was one to remember as they played to a 7-5-3 record under second year head coach Jeff Littwin. The team achieved a series of firsts, including the most wins in program history (7) and highest goals-per-game average (3.27). Individually, several players etched their names into the record books, led by standout performers Chelsea Martinez and Triniti Hymes-Richardson. Beyond the numbers, the team demonstrated resilience and growth, highlighted by dominant wins against Medgar Evers, Central Penn, and Trinity Washington. In addition, the season also included 15 total games, the most in team history, with memorable victories against CUNY York College (2-0), Keystone (1-0), and significant improvement against Suffolk CC (2-2) and SUNY Old Westbury (1-1) after losses last season.
The individual players also had record setting seasons as two players were at the top of every offensive statistical category. First, Chelsea Martinez was an offensive powerhouse. The junior forward emerged as the team’s offensive leader, breaking multiple records with Goals: 13, Assists: 15, and 41 Points on 55 Shots. Her creativity and consistency made her the team’s go-to player, with a season highlight being her leadership in the 13-0 win over Medgar Evers.
The second statndout of the season was Triniti Hymes-Richardson who proved herself to be a versatile playmaker. The sophomore striker provided a dynamic spark by posting 12 Goals, 9 Assists, and 33 Points with 54 Shots. She demonstrated her ability to deliver in key moments, by securing a tie against Suffolk CC in the closing seconds of the game.
Another important component to the team's success was freshman Diamond Pertillar who was a "Wall in Goal". Prior to a season ending knee injury, she stood out as a defensive anchor by posting a Save Percentage of .886, a Goals Against Average of 1.26, and 70 Saves in 645 minutes. Finally, Pertillar’s efforts included two shutouts and season-defining performances in several close matches.
One of the biggest additions to the team was the return of sophomore Anabel Ortega who contibuted significantly with 8 goals, 10 assists, and 26 points. Moreover, she was the vocal leader of the team.
All four of these players were recognized as USCAA Second Team All-Americans; while the team itself was ranked 7th in the nation narrowly missing the national tournament in Pittsburg.
The Sound bids farewell to Dafne Espana, the team’s sole graduating senior, who contributed as a forward/midfielder during her time with the program. While her senior season was limited, her leadership on and off the field will be missed.
With the majority of this record-breaking roster returning next year, the Sound’s future looks brighter than ever. Key players like Martinez, Hymes-Richardson, and Pertillar will lead the charge into what promises to be an even more successful season. Expectations are high as the team aims to build on their 2024 achievements and compete for a conference title.
Head Coach Jeff Littwin and Assistant Coach Gabby Savary are poised to take the team to new heights after this record-breaking season. They are working hard on tactical adjustments and player development efforts to significantly improve the team cohesion and offensive productivity, while recruting new and exciting young players.
