Women's Basketball Tops Penn State Shenango at USCAA National Tournament

Petersburg, V.A. - No. 9 Five Towns College women's basketball defeated No. 10 Penn State Shenango, 70-63 on Monday morning in the consolation bracket to earn the program's first-ever victory at the USCAA National Tournament.

Making their second appearance in the National Tournament, the Sound fell to No. 8 Southern Maine Community College on Sunday, 64-55. Penn State Shenango (18-9) dropped their opening round game to No. 7 Christendom, 76-52. 

Five Towns College started fast again in the first quarter shooting 10-17 (58.8%) from the floor and 4-8 (50%) from the three-point line. Senior Judith Girones (Barcelona, Spain) added 10 points in the first while Talaya Guirantes (Bellport, NY) scored 8 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter. Girones finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 1 assist in her final game. Five Towns College took a 45-29 lead into the half. 

In addition to Girones, three fellow senior student-athletes were also playing in their final game for the Sound and each contributed to the victory one last time. Leeza Theodore (Elmont, NY) added 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Gabrielle Sutphin (Edgewater Park, NJ) had 12 points, 11 rebounds, a game-high 6 steals, and 4 assists. HVIAC Player of the Year, Jordan Tobin (Massapequa, NY) finished with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. 

The Sound complete a historic season with a final record of 13-7, along with the HVIAC Regular Season and Conference Championship.
